      <image:title>Performance - An orchestra in two hands.</image:title>
<image:caption>At the age of 6 I fell in love with Beethoven symphonies, Bach Brandenburg Concertos, Mozart piano sonatas, and other classical music. At the age of 12 I decided that I wanted to be a professional musician, although I had not specifically decided that piano would be my main focus. That changed at the age of 15 when I watched the movie “Shine”, fell in love with Rachmaninoff and never looked back. I received my Bachelor’s, Master’s and will be receiving my Doctorate in May 2020, all within the same musical field of Piano Performance. I’ve had the privilege of performing numerous recitals at multiple venues, including my Carnegie Hall debut in 2016. I make it a point to perform several solo recitals a year, at churches, retirement homes, community venues, and wherever I can find a decent piano and an audience who is willing to listen!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Performance - Piano</image:title>
<image:caption>In addition to classical piano performance, I have worked in other genres including jazz, gospel, rock, Broadway, pop and whatever I find interesting. My first teacher was my father, who is an amateur musician and studied under jazz pianist Matt Dennis. So my introduction to music had a jazz slant, learning chords, inversions and voice leading early on. Although I did not major in jazz performance, I made it a point to take a couple jazz improv courses as an elective in college. Jazz knowledge has come in handy working at various churches and with a variety of teams, since playing by ear is a large part of church music, especially in the gospel idiom.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Performance - Guitar</image:title>
<image:caption>I began playing guitar at the age of 7 when I attended a Saturday morning music conservatory for children at the California State University Los Angeles music department. I began with classical lessons, learned my basic techniques, played in guitar ensembles, and went on to study privately for another year. At the age of 12 I became obsessed with electric guitar. Every day I would go home after school and listen to my favorite solos over and over, dissecting them measure by measure until I knew how to play them. I played in a handful of rock bands, none of which became any big deal, but I also played guitar at church beginning at age 12, and went on to lead worship in high school and college, often from the acoustic guitar.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Performance - Keyboard</image:title>
<image:caption>Just because someone plays the piano does not mean they are a good keyboard player. There is quite a difference between the acoustic instrument and the synthesizer. Playing keyboard allows for a countless library of sounds, pitch bending, shifting of sound parameters and keyboard percussion. Knowing how to work with keyboards and synthesizers is an extremely useful component within songwriting and performance of non-classical music.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Performance - Organ and Harpsichord</image:title>
<image:caption>Over the last couple of years I have had the privilege of playing in the early music orchestra at the University of North Texas. Here I have learned the art of reading “figured bass”, an early classical music prototype of the modern jazz lead sheet, and one that is not commonly studied by most classical musicians. Figured bass is heavily reliant upon improvisation, another topic which is sadly lacking in education of most classical music institutions. I have found alongside many of my other colleagues that improvisation can greatly broadens musical understanding and opportunities, and this helps to create a linkage with the jazz world, which is too often distanced from the classical simply because of its demand for improvisation. Aside from my experiences early music, I received pipe organ lessons, learning to work my feet on the pedals as well as my hands on the keys. Playing church organ is a valuable and in-demand skill around the world, and many pianists would benefit from rudimentary knowledge and ability at the pipe organ.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Performance - Bass</image:title>
<image:caption>Bass is one of those instruments where it is easy to learn the basics, but extremely difficult to master. Essentially anyone who can play guitar can technically play bass, since the four strings of the bass are the same as a guitar but an octave lower. To be a good bass player, one has to have a solid grasp of rhythm, note substitution and musical theory. Like guitar and keys, I primarily played bass in church groups, and on occasion in different rock bands. Being able to lay down bass tracks for songs that I write has been very helpful, both musically and financially, since I don’t have to hire other musicians every time I want to record a session!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Teaching - A step toward success</image:title>
<image:caption>Throughout my career I’ve had the opportunity to teach at several professional music schools across three US states. I have taught students from absolute beginners to advanced students preparing for competitions. I have taught young children, teenagers, college students, working professionals and retired adults. Some of my students have received high honors in statewide evaluation programs, and others have gone on to win or place in local and statewide competitions. Others simply play for enjoyment, want to learn how to write their own songs, play at church, join a band, and still some just want to be able to play that song they’ve always wanted to play. Whatever your musical goal is, I will help get you there!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Teaching - Forging a way forward.</image:title>
<image:caption>When I started teaching at the age of 15, I had no idea what I was doing, but I quickly realized that teaching forced me to analyze my own playing and then communicate what I was doing concisely, and in a way appropriate to the skill level of that student. Teaching has remained an indispensable part of my musical life, as it keeps me “practicing what I preach.” Being able to impart musical inspiration and knowledge is a great joy in life. Seeing the lightbulb go off in a student’s head, or celebrating the progress of a student who finally nails a difficult passage they haven’t been able to play for week keeps me motivated and humbled in my own journey.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Recording - Recording</image:title>
<image:caption>During my master’s degree I decided to take an elective course learning ProTools, one of the industry standard Digital Audio Workstations (DAW). This turned out to be one of the best decisions I ever made in school. My teacher was the prolific composer Pete Calandra, who wrote television and movie scores for the likes of Fox Sports, the History Channel, the Oprah Network, Special Olympics, Sundance Film Festival and more. His classes became so popular that there was a long waiting list and people would come to audit the class on a regular basis. I ended up joining two more semesters to learn more. We covered the basics of MIDI input, film scoring, mixing, music editing, audio mixing, live recording setup, session recording setup and more.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Recording</image:title>
<image:caption>Over the years I have built up my own home studio, complete with audio interface, studio monitors, multiple microphones, cables, synthesizer and more. I have worked with many musicians recording both in studio sessions and live recordings. Recently, two college musicians who I recorded with made it to the finals of a statewide music competition. Another vocalist I recorded with made it into every school she applied to for her master’s degree. Many musicians applying for competitions or school auditions will go the simple route of using a phone, or a cheaper single microphone for their recordings. This unfortunately never catches the true depth and range of tone, either for instrument or voice. If you are looking for quality recordings at reasonable prices, I can help!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Songwriting - SONGWRITING</image:title>
<image:caption>I began writing my own songs at age 11 with a friend in my class. I continued songwriting for several bands throughout middle school and high school, and released my first solo project works on MySpace when I was still in high school. Songwriting relies on a very different creative process than classical performance. It tends to focus around the words, and the message of the words. Oftentimes, less is more, musically speaking with songs. Many of the songs I write come from my own life experiences: the good, the bad, and the ugly. Wearing your heart on your sleeve is almost a requirement for a good song, which can be a daunting and vulnerable prospect. Yet it is equally as rewarding, because it allows the artist to create some of their most deeply personal and idiosyncratic works. On a musical level, creating my own “sound” is highly important to me. The way that I blend musical textures, the sound patches I select on a keyboard, the way I write drum beats, all of it is geared towards saying something personal that makes both musical sense, and has an emotional meaning to me. If I don’t understand what I’m doing or why, then the audience won’t either.</image:caption>
